Holidays 2009

I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday season. It felt rather short for me, but mainly because I spent most of the first week just sitting at home. Many people have already gone back to school or back to work, and I’m pretty much all packed and ready for departure. I’ll be going to bed soon for 3-4 hours then heading to the airport.

Starting on the Sunday right after Boxing Day, I accomplished a feat that is not easily attained – I met up with Charmaine 6 days in a row. That is my achievement for the holidays. And maybe reading & watching Twilight. In any case, here is a recap of my comings and goings over the last week or so, in bullet format, because you know you love bullet points (with horrific grammar) just as much as I do.

  • Dec 27th: Pacific Mall for lunch, walked around P-Mall, got bored of P-Mall, went to Vaughan Mills, bought shoes, broke.
  • Dec 28th: Downtown for dinner, watched Avatar in 3D, mind got blown.
  • Dec 29th: Brunch at Cora with friends, dinner party hosted by co-worker who served us a delicious full-course meal.
  • Dec 30th: P-Mall area again to take care of banking-related issues and chill over bubble tea.
  • Dec 31th – Jan 1st: NYE party at Lily’s house, made dumplings, rang in the New Year playing the most intense 3-hour game of Monopoly ever.
  • Jan 2nd: One last dinner and karaoke with some of my favourite people before the term begins.

Finally I’d like to wish everyone the best of luck in 2010, and definitely help me stay updated via blogging/Twittering/MSNing/Facebooking/Google Waving/morse coding madder than ever before.

Bring on 2009

Holidays are gone, and as of yesterday, so is my birthday. Therefore, the party’s over :( It was a really turbulent past 3 weeks, and I mean that in the good sense. Dec 30th was hot pot and despite having so many people from different social rings, it was still a success. Regrettably, I didn’t do anything for New Year’s Eve. After a lot of tentative planning, I ended up just hobo-ing at home. On New Years Day we hosted another dinner party, and it was pretty tiring for me. You know how your fingertips get shriveled up when you shower/wash dishes for a long time? I swear my entire hand was shriveled that night.

On Saturday, Evelyn and I had our joint birthday luncheon at Pacific Mall, and I got to see a lot of faces I haven’t seen in years. After lunch, our Secret Santa group finally got to do our exchange, and we all went to Evelyn’s place for some Wii and Twister. My scores were really volatile for Mario Kart, depending on the number of opportunities to fall into chasms, and Fred was apparently a natural at Twister. I came in second, thanks to pure aggression.

On Sunday I lugged all my crap back to Waterloo for a winter study term. To make things more depressing, there was freezing rain forecasted for that day. We arrived at 12:30, had lunch with family friends, went grocery shopping, and unpacked. After I settled in, my parents went home. Later that night I went out for dinner with some Loo friends, and finding the dining venue was an adventure in itself. We went to about three restaurants that were too full before resorting to Swiss Chalet. After that I chilled in Jinhui’s suite for a bit with her and Lis, then called it a night.

Classes aren’t very interesting. This term I’m taking Deterministic OR Models, Intermediate Financial Accounting II, Management Information Systems, Statistics for Business II, and Investment Management. I don’t have a lot of projects/assignments/tests/midterms this term, but the courses themselves aren’t exactly a breeze. My most feared course is accounting. I didn’t have a clue what the prof was talking about in the first lecture, and worst of all, I don’t know anyone in that class.

On Wednesday, my birthday plans were all over the place. The idea was to go to Bomber Wednesday, a popular weekly event at the student pub. I didn’t know if I wanted to drink, when I wanted to go to the pub, and if I wanted to buy anything. Somehow, though, everything worked out. Sort of. We left kind of late, so by the time we got there, the line-up was insanely long. They were operating on a one-in-one-out basis, so it was taking ridiculously long for us to move up. After waiting about 40 minutes, we had moved maybe two metres. We gave up, and decided to invade K-Zone, the local karaoke bar. We were able to grab a room for our group, and things finally started rolling. It started out innocently enough. But after 1.5 whiskey shots, a vodka shot, a strawberry colada, a beer, a Breezer, and a Flaming Lamborghini (which by the way tastes awesome), my judgment may have started to become just the slightest bit impaired. I wasn’t drunk, but another shot or two might have taken me there. Yeah so then stuff happened *mumble mumble* and I got home around 2:30.

I felt like crap when I woke up, so I spent the morning catching up on Desperate Housewives in bed. Life should totally be sweet like that. I had the most awesomest 21st birthday, surrounded by the most awesomest people, and I can’t thank them enough for it. Waterloo may be cold, but my friends are smoking hot ;) And now I really need to sleep and hit the gym after class.

Happy New Year!

2008 was a crazy year, with the economic crisis, US elections, Beijing Olympics, and so many other milestones. When I think about it, I feel pretty fortunate to be living through these historical events. Best wishes to you and yours for the New Year, and here’s hoping to an equally exciting 2009! (So long as my pension stays in tact…)
